A Movie And A Movement

MOOZ-lum: A Movie And A Movement

There are films that we’ll see this weekend just for sheer entertainment value, but Qasim Basir’s “MOOZ-lum,” is more than a film it’s a movement. On the surface it’s a dramatic well-written film about Tariq, a young man struggling with defining religion for himself. He is Muslim and the lessons he’s learned at the hands of his religious teachers, including his father, bring him nothing but pain.

Waiting for "Superman"

Waiting for "Superman"

WAITING FORSUPERMAN”, which opened nationwide in October to rave reviews, has triggered an intense national debate about the state of public education in the U.S. The film exposes the failings of the American school system as it depicts five intertwined stories of students struggling to get an education. Several initiatives have been launched in support of the film, including a national “Take the Pledge” campaign, which provides a way for non-profits, foundations and corporations to match individual pledge levels with powerful action items aimed at helping both students and public schools.

NBA’s Baron Davis Nominated For Emmy

NBA’s Baron Davis Nominated For Emmy For “Crips And Bloods” Documentary

Dear Emmy voters, Baron Davis regrets to inform you that he won’t be able to attend the awards ceremony for his documentary film on L.A. gang life.

By then, he’ll be busy with his other passion.

The Los Angeles Clippers point guard will already be at training camp when the Emmy awards for news and documentaries are handed out in New York City next Monday.

From afar, though, he’ll be rooting for the film “Crips and Bloods: Made in America,” which is up for best documentary. Davis served as executive producer, putting up the money and providing entree into a world that he escaped from — largely because of basketball — but hasn’t forgotten.

“This is very prestigious,” Davis said in an interview with The Associated Press. “We’ve really been able to tackle a subject that’s kind of been picked on, but we’ve been able to tackle it and really shed some light on it from both sides of the spectrum. We want to let people formulate their own opinions about what’s going on in this country and in the impoverished communities.”

The 31-year-old Davis longs to be more than just a star athlete. He believes he can be an agent for social change, which is why he decided to form a production company, Verso Entertainment, and pushed to make the film about two of America’s most notorious gangs.

I Will Not Apologize

I Will Not Apologize

Writer, actor and comedian Charlie Murphy has been a favorite since he captured the funny bones of America as a regular on the Emmy-nominated "Chappelle's Show." Murphy's breakout role – as himself – in his "True Hollywood Story" about Rick James and Prince ranks among the best sketch comedy performances of all time. Murphy, the brother of fellow comedian Eddie Murphy, will bring his no-holds-barred comedy to his first live performance DVD, "I Will Not Apologize," being released nationwide on February 16 by Image Entertainment.

Throughout his career, Charlie Murphy has done it all. As co-star of Comedy Central's top-rated "Chappelle's Show," writer of the DreamWorks comedy "Norbit" and voice on the critically acclaimed cartoon "The Boondocks," Charlie Murphy has made quite a name for himself. His film credits have spanned the last 20 years, ranging from "Harlem Nights" with Eddie Murphy to "The Perfect Holiday" with Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union. Now, drenched in the same "in-your-face" style of comedy that has made him a fan favorite, Charlie Murphy delivers his debut stand-up performance, "I Will Not Apologize," as only he can…raw and uncut.

THE HIP HOP PROJECT

THE HIP HOP PROJECT

Produced by Queen Latifah and Bruce Willis, The Hip Hop Project is a response to those who describe hip-hop as negative. (Some is, some isn't.) Art Start founder Scott Rosenberg and his partner, Matt Ruskin, spent four years documenting the work of this New York-based program, and the result is a film bursting with positivity. The focus of their attention is rapper/social worker Chris "Kazi" Rolle, who helps a group of at-risk African American teenagers to produce a record. He's assisted by his fiancée, Robin "Kheperah" Kearse, a music industry veteran. From the start, they discourage misogyny and thug posturing, but encourage their charges to rhyme from the heart. Released in conjunction with the movie, the Hip Hop Project CD took years to materialize, because the aspiring rappers were expected to keep up with school work and sometimes had to take time out to deal with family crises. The charismatic Christopher "Cannon" Mapp, for instance, gets involved while his mother is entering the final stages of multiple sclerosis. Kazi, who is in his 20s, has issues of his own. In encouraging these kids to strengthen family bonds, he realizes he needs to set a better example. So, the filmmakers follow Kazi as he returns to the Bahamas to pay his respects to his foster mother. Then, he re-connects with his birth mother, who left him behind when she moved to the States. All the while, he teaches his charges to write, rap, and record an album. Willis and rap mogul Russell Simmons help out along the way. Viewers concerned about language should be advised that there's profanity here, but no negativity. Even Oprah, an outspoken critic of gangsta rap, would approve. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

‘Operation Small Axe’ trailer

Ever since the cold blooded, videotaped murder of Oscar Grant at 2 a.m. New Year's Day by BART cop Johannes Mehserle, Oaklanders have covered the city with the message, "I am Oscar Grant!" - Frame from the film "Operation Small Axe"

“Operation Small Axe” takes a raw and unflinching look at life under police terrorism in Oakland, drawing parallels with the struggles against oppression in Palestine and South Africa. Through the stories of Oscar Grant and Lovelle Mixon, the film focuses on the occupation of Oakland’s communities of color by militarized and racist police forces.

Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Johannes Mehserle on Jan. 1 of this year. On March 21, Lovelle Mixon was killed by Oakland police after having allegedly shot five OPD officers, killing four.

The film, now debuting to rave reviews around the Bay Area, is directed and produced by 393 Films’ Adimu Madyun, edited by Angela N. Carroll, with camera work by Hooker Boy, Angela N. Carroll, Siraj Fowler and Adimu Madyun. Prisoners of Conscience Committee Minister of Information JR is the executive producer.

Watch this “Operation Small Axe” trailer for a taste of the bitter but little known war waged daily on the streets of Black and Brown Oakland by the police against the people. Now that the judge has ordered the murder trial moved out of Oakland of the cop who killed Oscar Grant in cold blood two hours into the 2009 New Year on a BART platform in front of hundreds of horrified passengers, this film will inform all Californians why justice for Oscar Grant is imperative.

Arrange for “Operation Small Axe” to be shown in your community by contacting Minister of Information JR at blockreportradio@gmail.com or calling the SF Bay View, where JR is associate editor, at (415) 671-0789.

Beyond brilliant,

By

Chris Sutton

I got to see a preview of Sticky Fingaz' directorial debut, A Day in the Life, and it's a must see for any fan of hip hop, action, drama, or movies in general. The movie is unique in that the entire length is rapped. Sort of like Romeo and Juliet being done entirely in poetry, not a single word is spoken in this film unless it rhymes. An old lady rings Sticky Fingaz' door to complain? She raps. Everyone. Every second. And it doesn't get old.

Hollywood actors move closer to strike

Hollywood actors move closer to strike

AFP: Friday July 11, 2008
Hollywood's top actors' union appeared closer to strike late Thursday after the studios group said the actors had given no ground in contract talks.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) accused the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) of making unreasonable demands in talks Thursday on its proposed replacement of the old contract which expired on June 30.
"The refusal of SAG's Hollywood leadership to accept this offer is the latest in a series of actions by SAG leaders that, in our opinion, puts labor peace at risk," AMPTP said in a statement.
SAG "unreasonably expects to obtain more in these negotiations than directors, writers and other actors obtained during their negotiations," the studios said.
The 120,000-strong SAG did not provide any details of its response to the proposed contract after a five-hour meeting, but said its committee members will meet Friday to discuss the AMPTP's response to their demands.
AMPTP called on union leaders to put their offer to SAG members for ratification, saying it "includes more than 250 million dollars in additional compensation, important new media rights and protection for pension and health benefits."
"The last thing we need is a long, hot summer of labor strife that puts even more pressure on a badly struggling economy and deprives audiences of the entertainment they clearly desire in such difficult times," the studios said.
"Any further delay in reaching a reasonable and comprehensive agreement does a disservice to the thousands of working people of our industry who are already being seriously harmed by the ever worsening de facto strike."
Hollywood is currently in limbo after a previous contract between SAG and the AMPTP expired on June 30 with no new deal ready to replace it.
Ill-tempered negotiations between SAG and AMPTP have echoed the build-up to the strike last winter by screenwriters that paralyzed Hollywood for 100 days. It became the US entertainment industry's most damaging dispute for 20 years, costing an estimated two billion dollars.
Echoing that dispute, actors are seeking an improved share of royalty profits from new media and Internet sales.

Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic Set For Bigscreen

Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic Set For Bigscreen

DreamWorks has acquired the life rights to Martin Luther King Jr. and is bringing a biopic on the slain civil rights leader to the big screen, reports Variety.  Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones will produce.
King's estate owns the copyright to all the speeches, books and famous works of the slained civil rights leader. This will be the first film to be authorized by the estate and gives the producers the right to utilize King's intellectual property -- including his famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered during the 1963 March on Washington.
"We are all honored that the King Estate is giving us the opportunity to tell the story of these defining, historic events," Spielberg. "It is our hope that the creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King's life can combine to present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of."
"In trying to tackle such an ambitious project, the question we had to ask ourselves is, 'Why now?' " DreamWorks CEO and co-chairman Stacey Snider said. "The answer lies in MLK's own words: 'All progress is precarious.' With every step forward, new obstacles emerge and we must never forget that his life and his teachings continue to challenge us every day to stand up to hatred and inequality.
King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th, 1968, at the age of 39.

"In Prison My Whole Life"

William Francome is a fairly typical, white middle-class guy. Typical except for the fact that he is about to embark on a journey into the dark heart of the American judicial system; the tangled world of renowned Death Row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.
The connection between these two characters is a simple one, and the pretext for this film, as Will explains:
"I was born in London on December 9th 1981. Over 3000 miles away Mumia Abu-Jamal, a Black Panther and radical journalist, was arrested for the murder of a police officer in Philadelphia. He claimed he was innocent but was sentenced to death and has been awaiting execution ever since. Over the years, he has attracted massive international support from organisations like Amnesty International and world leaders like Nelson Mandela amongst others. I'm now 24 years old and in that time Mumia has become the most famous and controversial death row inmate in America".
Despite his situation, and against all odds, Mumia has managed to penetrate the consciousness of people like Will. Through his writings and his web and radio broadcasts from Death Row, he has become known to many as "the Voice of the Voiceless".
"In Prison My Whole Life" takes us to some surprising places and brings us into contact with some of America?s most original minds. Never-seen-before footage and brand new evidence create a prevailing case for reasonable doubt while exploring the socio-political climate of America ? past and present. Angela Davis, Mos Def, Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Snoop Dogg, Steve Earle, Amy Goodman and many others take us through a decades-old struggle for equality, fairness and respect that so many Americans strive for to this day.
Mumia?s cause has created a political storm but after the politicians have said their piece, after the court papers have been filed and the protestors have gone home, we are left with a film about a man ? a father, a son, an inspiration and a pariah - who faces his twenty-fifth year on Death Row.
Extraordinary though Mumia?s story is, he is only one of 3,350 people currently on death row in the United States. This film allows him not only to speak to us, but also on behalf of those others who cannot find a voice.

The Obama Deception

The Obama Deception is a hard-hitting film that completely destroys the myth that Barack Obama is working for the best interests of the American people.

The Obama phenomenon is a hoax carefully crafted by the captains of the New World Order. He is being pushed as savior in an attempt to con the American people into accepting global slavery.

We have reached a critical juncture in the New World Order's plans. It's not about Left or Right: it's about a One World Government. The international banks plan to loot the people of the United States and turn them into slaves on a Global Plantation.

Covered in this film: who Obama works for, what lies he has told, and his real agenda. If you want to know the facts and cut through all the hype, this is the film for you.

Watch the Obama Deception and learn how:

- Obama is continuing the process of transforming America into something that resembles Nazi Germany, with forced National Service, domestic civilian spies, warrantless wiretaps, the destruction of the Second Amendment, FEMA camps and Martial Law.

- Obama's handlers are openly announcing the creation of a new Bank of the World that will dominate every nation on earth through carbon taxes and military force.

- International bankers purposefully engineered the worldwide financial meltdown to bankrupt the nations of the planet and bring in World Government.

- Obama plans to loot the middle class, destroy pensions and federalize the states so that the population is completely dependent on the Central Government.

- The Elite are using Obama to pacify the public so they can usher in the North American Union by stealth, launch a new Cold War and continue the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The information contained in this film is vital to the future of the Republic and to freedom worldwide. President Barack Obama is only the tool of a larger agenda. Until all are made aware, humanity will remain captive to the masters of the New World Order.

911 Missing Links - The Definitive Truth About 911

911 Missing Links - The Definitive Truth About 911.

Officially released on 8/18/2008.
911 MISSING LINKS is the first film to expose the identity of the criminals responsible for 911.

This documentary contains the definitive truth about 911. Created from investigations by agents, analysts and assets of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and Intelligence sectors of the United States Armed Forces who are still Loyal to America. Also utilizing evidence from Foreign Intelligence organizations, local law enforcement agencies and independent investigators, 911 Missing Links goes where no other 911 Documentary has yet dared to go.

You will also learn why even the most popular movies on the subject have failed to address the evidence presented in this film and why different factions of the 911 truth movement constantly bog any real progress down by bickering among themselves because the facts will make it abundantly clear that the so-called 9/11 "Truth" movement has also been infiltrated and is ultimately controlled by the same criminal group who masterminded the attacks.

As they say, 'If you want to control the dissenters, you lead the dissent.'

Here is a man who transcends all political divisions. And peace is not what he brings; he brings a sword. The majority cannot be allowed to sit back in self-satisifaction.

It must forever be told that complacency and provincialism are all too common diseases of the human soul. Says Vergès, "I cannot tolerate to see a man being humiliated [by a self-righteous lynch mob] - not even an enemy." This is magnanimity speaking. He glorifies subversion. He speaks out in the name of the dregs of the society. He defends the victims of perpetual ostracism.
Every man, no matter what his crime may be, deserves to have his story heard. And if this man cannot tell the story himself, Vergès will tell the story for him. This is the oft-asked question nowadays: "Why do they hate us?"
Everything in this world has a cause, and our enemies have countless legitimate reasons for hating us. Indeed, every society gets the malcontents and criminals it deserves. Vergès wants us to see this. This movie is a punch in the face. It is your face and Vergès' fist.

American Drug War: The Last White Hope
American Drug War: The Last White Hope

Understanding the "drug war" is all about understanding profit. Alchohol and tobacco cause problems that folks profit from - drug companies, hospitals, etc. Marijuana on the other hand, which anyone can grow in their backyard, has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of illnesses that drug companies would like to charge thousands of dollars to treat.
The decriminalization of drugs like pot would cut the profits of large industries by huge amounts. Those industries exert enormous political pressure, hence the drug war.

Don't ever think for an instant the Government has your well-being at heart. It cares only about money, and the drug companies line its pockets, both directly and with tax revenue. That's why there's a drug war. It's a war on competition.

The Murder of Fred Hampton

THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON began as a film portrait of Hampton and the Illinois Black Panther Party, but half way through the shoot, Hampton was murdered by Chicago policeman. In an infamous moment in Chicago history and politics, over a dozen policeman burst into Hampton s apartment while its occupants were sleeping, killing Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark and brutalizing the other occupants. Filmmakers Mike Gray and Howard Alk arrived a few hours later to shoot film footage of the crime scene that was later used to contradict news reports and police testimony. Recently restored and reworked by Gray, THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON is a chilling slice of American history.

Also included is a short film, CICERO MARCH, which chronicled a group who defied Mayor Richard J. Daley s order to march into predominantly white Cicero to protest racism and injustice.

The Murder of Fred Hampton

This film displays the evil attitudes and destructive power of the Chicago police department in murdering a shining light named Fred Hampton.
"Chairman Fred" as he was known to those who worked and knew him, as displayed in this DVD, is a very committed person in the struggle to uplift his people in his community through education, free clinics, and free breakfast and lunch programs (most of these programs, started by the Black Panther Party was taken over by the Federal Government).
If those in power did not fear what Fred and the others in the BPP was doing, who knows what strides we would have made and achievements obtained earlier instead of later.

The Murder of Fred Hampton

Darfur Diaries: Message From Home

By
Daniel B. Clendenin
Despite global hand-wringing, accords, agreements, and peace-keeping forces, the Darfur genocide that began in July 2003 continues. Directors Aisha Bain and Jen Marlowe take the viewer on-site to Darfur, and through on-camera interviews with dozens of locals they let the people describe the tragedy in their own words. Their personal anecdotes are heart-breaking and appalling.
The desert landscape, wind-swept and littered with bomb fragments, is stark. Despite its denials, the Sudanese government under president Omar al-Bashir has backed the Janjaweed militias to plunder, pillage, rape women of every age, and liquidate entire villages.
According to the United Nations, 400,000 people have died, and over 2 million have been displaced (many refugees pouring into Chad).
This documentary is only 55 minutes long, but it's a graphic, powerful and informative reminder of how much of the world can ignore the most unimaginable horrors when countries have no self-interest at stake.

The Power Of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a useful blueprint for others in the future.
By
Robin G. Sowton "rsowton"
The Power Of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba became the first country faced with the peak oil crisis. Suddenly a supply of 13 million tons of oil a year dropped to 1 million. The change was seen almost immediately-within weeks. There were power outages, no air conditioning, and no elevators running. People would try to get to work with whatever transportation was available only to discover that there was no electricity at their jobs. The Cuban government had to import 2 million bicycles for transportation. Even construction was very limited because cement production requires high levels of fuel.

However, the biggest and most immediate problem became food scarcity. There was no fuel to transfer food and no electricity to refrigerate it, and the massive use of oil-based fossil fuel for pesticides and farm machinery had disappeared. Within the first few years of this crisis, these constraints, coupled with the continued U.S. blockade on food, resulted with most Cubans losing an average of 20 lbs per person.

With hunger spreading, people were left with no other choice and resorted to growing food wherever they could, and this led to widespread urban gardening. Famine was prevented by converting every open space in the city into gardening. Because they could no longer get access to oil-based pesticides, farmers had to resort to growing food organically.

Farmers also began the practice of crop-mixing to reduce pests, and scientists began making and exporting bio-pesticides. Changes resulted in smaller farms and more privately-owned cooperatives. Decision making became localized with fewer state regulations. Even schools became more decentralized.

Despite the many problems that Cuba continues to face, the Cubans have managed to find a way to use less energy. Today, the average Cuban uses 1/8 the energy of the average American.

Whether you view peak oil as real and inevitable, or as just a `market creation,' I think that you will still find this film interesting and insightful--and perhaps, inspiring.

Redemption - The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic docu-drama
By

John Green

Redemption - The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story

Amazon:  HIP HOP, REGGAE,DVD, R&B
This is a fantastic "docu-drama" which captures the essence of the life of Stan "Tookie" Williams, executed by the State of California on December 22, 2005. Williams co-founded the notoriously violent Crips street gang in Los Angeles before eventually being sent to death row over the murders of four people in 1979 (a charge he always denied).

The film, starring Jamie Foxx as Williams, focuses on Tookie's death row experience where he begins to take stock of his negative achievements in life. From there, Tookie embarks on an ambitious project of writing children's books aimed at steering youth clear of gangs. By banking on his street credentials as the world's toughest gangster he catches the attention of youth in a way that parents, teachers and police officers cannot and even brings Crips and Bloods together at peace rallies.

This is a well-acted drama that closely follows real-life events in its study of Tookie's transformation. The film also raises serious questions about Tookie's subsequent execution despite his valiant efforts to right his earlier wrongs, his claim to innocence and his multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. If California would execute this man despite his activism (or because of it...), then who can ever claim to have truly achieved redemption?

The Great Debaters

5.0 out of 5 stars No Debate: This Film Is Great!,
By Rocky Raccoon

`The Great Debaters' offers what great movie viewing is all about. Based on a true story, the film takes us to Wiley, an African-American Methodist college in Texas during the Depression in 1935. Inspiring, harrowing, and uplifting, the film gives proper transcendence especially during a time and place that didn't offer many breaks.

We are first introduced to Professor Polson (Denzel Washington), a tenacious idealist and poet. As professor at Wiley and debate coach, he hardly yields on any of his principles. Inspired by the man who is named for the heinous lynching, Polson tells his debate recruits that it was in Lynch's best interests to keep Black people, "Physically strong, but psychologically weak." It is with this explanation that we understand his zealous approach to his debate team, and why he makes their training so rigorous.

Entering the field are forty-five tryouts, of which, only four will be selected: two representatives and two alternates. Of the three who make it, we get to know Henry Lowe (Nate Parker) a charismatic and bright figurehead who is easily distracted by beautiful women and hard liquor. Joining him are Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett), the first young woman to join the debate team, and James Farmer, Jr. (Denzel Whitaker) forever young at age 14, but an ever resourceful scholar and son of a minister, James Farmer, Sr. (Forrest Whitaker). [No real life relations.] As he notices a romance start to blossom between his teammates, his resentment grows. As the one who researches many of the arguments Henry and Samantha provide on the podium, he is put on the sidelines both in terms of the limelight and the love light.

As you might guess, Wiley enjoys a certain amount of success, and the price of success is opposition. Polson spends a great deal of his time and rhetorical talent organizing a sharecroppers' union, much to the chagrin of Sheriff Dozier (John Heard) who won't have unrest in his sleepy Texas town. In one scene the Farmer family is making a trek by car on a rural country road as they pass a poor white farm. The children who seem so mischievous run alongside the car as they pass along, unaccustomed to seeing a "Negro" with an automobile. Perhaps distracted by the nearby children, he runs over a pig, and in a quietly intense exchange between Farmer, Sr. and the owner, is extorted of a month's paycheck. This reminded me of a similar scene in the 1980's movie, `Centennial,' and showed the contrast between a good film with a similar theme and a great one.

In another part, the debate team makes their way by night to their debate destination when they come across a truly horrible sight. What they see through the windshield reveals a mob of white men who don't like having their heinous deeds brought to light. Shaken, they each try to come to cope with their discovery as they often lose focus and courage in the face of Polson's opposition and the violence laid before them.

Always kept in check by their unyielding leader, the debate team holds out for all possible opportunity. Audacious but unflinching, Polson invites Harvard to a debate match. One of the master strokes of the movie is how the debates and their topics match the action that goes on all around them. Show and tell is mixed expertly for a meaningful movie experience.

`The Great Debaters' is a top-echelon movie experience. Although it is reminiscent of movies like Mississippi Burning, To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition), and Akeelah and the Bee it captures a fulfilling true life story in a way that doesn't feel like rehash or contain a wasted scene. Sony Pictures Classics' The Wackness

THE HIGHEST PER SCREEN AVERAGE OF THE JULY 4TH WEEKEND ($23k+ per screen)
LOS ANGELES, July 7 /PRNewswire/ --
Winner - 2008 Sundance Audience Award
Winner - 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award
Currently in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, expanding to select markets July 11th and July 18, nationally on August 1
Starring Sir Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck (TV's Drake & Josh), Olivia Thirlby (Juno, Snow Angels), Famke Janssen, Mary-Kate Olsen, Jane Adams & rapper/actor Method Man
Written and directed by Jonathan Levine
It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, is only beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radio, graffiti and public drunkenness.
Two people, however, are missing out on the excitement. Luke (Josh Peck) is a socially uncomfortable teenage pot dealer with no friends, issues with his parents, and a whopping lack of confidence with girls. He trades weed for sessions with his therapist, Dr. Squires (Sir Ben Kingsley), whose much-younger wife (Famke Janssen) is slipping away from him. Squires, a drug-addled shrink with a hairline retreating to the back of his neck and a state of mind slouching back to adolescence, is an unlikely role model -- but the two of them forge a friendship based on a mutual need: neither one is getting laid.
The intergenerational duo set off on a crawl that takes them all over New York, where they encounter several of Luke's "business associates," including a Phish-following dreadlocked pixie (Mary-Kate Olsen), a New Wave, keyboard-playing one-hit-wonder (Jane Adams), and Luke's supplier (Method Man). Luke has long had an aching crush on Dr. Squires' way-out-of-his-league stepdaughter, Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby from "Juno"), and is stunned at his good luck when she returns his affections. Luke's innocent first love experience with Stephanie becomes a life lesson that sets him on the pathway towards adulthood. And when Squires breaks down, it is up to the younger man to throw the older one a lifeline.
Propelled by an exuberant hip hop score, "The Wackness" captures the spell of 1994 -- a time of pagers, not cell phones; a time when Tupac and Biggie were alive but Kurt Cobain had just died. Funny and moving, "The Wackness" is an offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity.

"One of Our Sons is Missing": June 19 - 21, 2008, Brooklyn

We All Have Secrets... Some Kill

Provocative and engaging, One of Our Sons is Missing explores the lies we tell ourselves and the truths we hide from others when a Caribbean family is forced to confront dark secrets, prejudices and fear as the threat, and reality, of HIV/AIDS invades their world. It also examines the risks to which young people may be exposed in their relationships, often without being fully aware of the consequences.

When first staged in his native Trinidad, Godfrey Sealy's work was considered at once groundbreaking and scandalous for dealing openly with the issues of sexuality and HIV/AIDS in the English-speaking Caribbean. Unfortunately, after almost two decades, the scandal is its narrative remains painfully contemporary.

IYAGO ENTERTAINMENT GROUP Presents WHAT BLACK MEN THINK

An In Depth View of How Myths, Stereotypes and Misrepresentations render Black Men Non-Necessities in their Communities and Families... In the most provocative Black film of the year, Janks Morton presents a searing examination of the role that myths, stereotypes and misrepresentations have played in the decimation of modern era black relationships, and how the symbiotic relationship between government, the media and black leadership perpetuates misinformation to further marginalize the role of black men in society. Since the triumphs of the civil rights legislations of the early 1960s havoc and decimation has been wreaked on the Black family with a specific devastation on the Black man. With negative imagery of the media, the failed policy of the great society and modern era black leadership abandoning tenets that historically held the community together, a new form of mental slavery has perpetuated an undeclared civil war in the Black Community...

New Civil Rights Film Opening in LA April 25, Documents Obama's Gap Between teh Promise of our Ideals and the Reality of their time."

New Civil Rights Film Opening in Los Angeles April 25, Documents Obama's "Gap Between the Promise of Our Ideals and the Reality of Their Time"

BROOKLYN, NY--(Marketwire - April 3, 2008) - The independent feature film "Dare Not Walk Alone" (www.darenotwalkalone.com) opens April 25 at the Laemmle Grande 4-Plex in Los Angeles. Acclaimed as  "brave filmmaking" by the San Jose Mercury News, this award-winning documentary delivers a new generation's take on civil rights, set to a soundtrack that flows from gospel to hip-hop.

"Dare Not Walk Alone" vividly portrays the heroism of campaigners for equality, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., alongside grim realities of life today on streets where those campaigns were fought, in a place that symbolizes what Sen. Barack Obama has called "the gap between the promise of our ideals and the reality of their time."

Hailed by critics as "a powerhouse of a picture... a triumph of outrage and empathy" (Aaron Mesh, Willamette Weekly); "a powerful and important film" (Orlando Weekly); "the grittiest version of civil rights history I've ever seen" (Peter Miller, Co-producer of Ken Burns' Jazz).

The film's young writer and director, Jeremy Dean, used rarely seen archive footage, like Dr. King's arrest in Saint Augustine, Florida, during a campaign of non-violent protest against segregation. Says Dean, "A lot of people who visit Florida don't know about the courageous campaign of civil disobedience coordinated here by Dr. King, the SCLC and the NAACP. Tourists of all races now vacation on beaches where blacks once braved club-wielding whites to swim."

The 1964 campaign culminated in passage of the first civil rights act after the world witnessed a motel owner pouring acid into a swimming pool of black and white bathers. The film illuminates these moving images from the past with present day interviews of the participants, including Ambassador Andrew Young, who was beaten up in Saint Augustine. In the only interview such ever filmed, motel owner James Brock describes his encounter with Dr. King.

To this mix Dean adds the perspective of African Americans living in Saint Augustine today, teenagers who see hip-hop as "the only way out" and kids to whom Dr. King's dream of a "Beloved Country" still seems like only a dream.

The film shows signs of hope, like a 2004 service of reconciliation at a church that banned blacks in 1964, but the film lets viewers draw their own conclusions about how far we've come and where we must go from here.

About "Dare Not Walk Alone" Picked for non-theatrical distribution by THINKFilm after a strong showing at Cinequest in 2006, the film was signed for theatrical distribution by Indican Pictures after winning Audience Award for Best Film at the 2007 Deep Focus Film Festival. Written and directed by Jeremy Dean; produced by Stephen Cobb, Jeremy Dean, and Richard Mergener; executive producers are Stephen Cobb and Chey Cobb.

"Divine Intervention"

Coincidentally, Reverend Gibbs eventually stumbles upon a young lady who sparks his interest but presents a challenge to him. The young, lovely, and witty schoolteacher Divine, initially unbeknownst to Reverend Gibbs, is the daughter of Reverend Matthews and she has lost her faith in God due to losing her mother several years back to cancer. Reverend Gibbs tries to win her over while restoring her faith in God and steering clear of her dry humored and overly protective father in the process.

Reverend Matthews' prospects of returning to the church eventually lessen and Reverend Gibbs moves closer to assuming a permanent role as pastor of the church. That is until he meets even stronger opposition in the jealous and scandalous Deacon Wells, who attempts to uncover some elements of Reverend Gibbs' past which may prevent him from winning the seat of permanent pastor of the church and more importantly, a place in the heart of Divine. Divine Intervention is a funny, upbeat spiritual journey about romance, religion, and scandal that will succeed with the ever popular and abundant, urban churchgoing audience and general viewers will embrace it for its warmth, humor and controversy.
